Lines and stakes
Always use the correct gauge line for the size of the kite you’re flying. If you’re in any doubt, check with the manufacturer. Most manufacturers supply lines which are suitable for flying in average wind conditions but if you're using your kite in higher winds you may need to upgrade your lines. As always your friendly Flexifoil retailer can advise.
Using the correct length of line is equally important. Most kites are designed to fly on lines between 20 and 40 metres (65 and 130 feet). If you’re flying in very clean air (translation: a constant wind with no gusts) you can use a shorter line. Areas with trees or buildings call for longer lines so you can fly above the dirty, turbulent air. Obviously if you're using longer lines you need to make sure that you’ve enough room around you to accommodate them.
Ground stakes are used to hold the kite down while you’re getting set up and are an essential part of any kiter’s kit. They’re surprisingly easy to lose, so a useful tip is to attach strips of brightly coloured material to your stake. It’s also essential that you don’t leave stakes unattended on the flying field as people can trip over or fall into them.
