How it began
Ray Merry and Andrew Jones who were graduates from Newcastle-upon-Tyne University spent many hours testing and talking about their strange wind inflated wings during the early 1970’s in England. Seen here with the ‘Limpit’, a vinyl wigwam type shelter used as an operations base for early test flights. It was the structure you see above the wigwam, made of bamboo, plastic sheeting, counter balance weights and string, that ultimately led to the Flexifoil Stacker Power Kite. Kites and kite flying were never even thought about during the very early stages of a project exploring the force of wind.
Their invention needed a name and Flexifoil was born. They joined forces with the Van Dort brothers, Mauritz and Theo. Mauritz worked for a Dutch fabric company and Theo was an entrepreneurial investor. With the right team in place, it wasn’t long before Flexifoil kites started to appear on fields, beaches and wide open spaces across Europe.
Today, Andrew is still inventing, Ray has his own kite business in the USA and Theo and Mauritz left their legacy to Theo’s son Anthony who still heads up the brand today.
3 Guinness World Records
In 2012, Flexifoil was the chosen brand to supply kit and support to Sir Richard Branson and his family as they embarked on accomplishing three world records. Sir Richard went on to achieve the world record for the oldest person to cross the English Channel by kite, son Sam became the world record holder for the fastest crossing of the English Channel by kite and many of the Branson family and friends went on to achieve the world record for the most number of people to kitesurf the English Channel.

We’re equally committed to growing the sport by spreading the word and encouraging as many people as possible to join the growing kite community worldwide. We work hard to make our kites the very best in the world. But there’s always room for improvement, so your ideas and opinions are essential. The more information you can give us about what’s good, bad and ugly about our products, the better they’ll become. The better they become, the more people will buy them. The more people buy them, the more fun they will have. Simple, really!
